STARKVILLE — Brookhaven High School ended a 21-year state championship drought Thursday night, defeating powerhouse West Point 31-19 to capture the MHSAA Class 5A crown at Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium.
The victory marks the Panthers’ second state title in program history and their first since 2004.
“This feels amazing. Nobody gave us a chance to beat a team like that,” Brookhaven head coach Darien Dorsey said. “West Point is an outstanding program that everyone wants to be like. I’m so happy for our kids, coaching staff, school, and community.”
West Point struck first when quarterback Quintin Thompson connected with Ja’Michael Strong on a 57-yard touchdown pass, giving the Green Wave a 6-0 lead with 2:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Green Wave extended their advantage to 12-0 when Markinzius Bell recovered a fumble in the end zone with 7:33 left in the second quarter.
Brookhaven answered with a 24-yard field goal by Isaac Iles with 4:46 remaining in the half, trimming the deficit to 12-3.
After forcing a turnover on downs, Panthers quarterback Jaden Allen scrambled 51 yards for a touchdown, pulling Brookhaven within 12-10 with 2:10 left before halftime.
West Point responded quickly as Colt Whitacre hit Bryceson Hoskins for a 22-yard touchdown pass with 31 seconds remaining, pushing the lead to 19-10 at the break.
The third quarter belonged entirely to Brookhaven, which outscored the Green Wave 21-0 to seize control.
On the opening drive of the second half, Allen found Dreamus Harron for a 57-yard touchdown strike, cutting the deficit to 19-17 with 9:51 remaining in the third.
After West Point failed on fourth down at the Brookhaven 46-yard line, running back Caiden Quarles gave the Panthers their first lead on a 19-yard touchdown run, making it 24-19 with 4:01 left in the quarter.
Jeremy Bibbs put the game out of reach with a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown, extending the lead to 31-19.
West Point turned the ball over on downs twice in the fourth quarter, and E.J. Ratliff sealed the victory with an interception with 17 seconds remaining.
“Once we made our adjustments at halftime, we knew we had a chance,” Dorsey said. “Defensively, stopping a team like West Point is extremely difficult with what they do, but our guys are tough. They felt disrespected, they wanted the challenge, and it was awesome to watch. When teams go for it on fourth down, we wanted to make it hurt. Those stops can change the outcome of a game. I’m just super proud of Caiden and this entire group—this is awesome.”
Quarles rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, earning game MVP honors for the 12-2 Panthers.
“This is unbelievable,” Quarles said. “This was the plan since summer workouts—all the training was to get to this point and win it. I made a couple of mistakes early, but I overcame them, kept running hard, and did whatever I had to do to help the team win.”
Thompson led West Point (13-1) with 104 yards rushing in the loss.
